The “Japanese Alps” is the collective name for the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains), Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains), and Central Alps (Kiso Mountains); three towering ranges that contain 92 of the 100 tallest mountains in Japan. The Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range (pictured) is part of the northern end of the Northern Alps. Mt. Hakuba (2,932m), sometimes referred to as Mt. Shirouma, is the highest peak in that range and is clearly viewable from HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR, a popular summer spot in Hakuba.

Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort opened for the summer season today, 4/28 (Fri.). This first day of operation was blessed with fine weather right from the morning, and the sweet aroma of baking cookies wafting through the air greeted visitors arriving one after another at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR. In fact, five restaurants in total, including THE CITY BAKERY (pictured), opened for business today along with the gondola.

Almost all of Iwatake’s summer activities are now open, include the Yoo-Hoo! Swing, mountaincarts, leashed horseback riding experience, the Iwatake MTB PARK, rental MTB + Hitotoki Downhill Experience, and ATV cruise. Also, starting this season, pets are now allowed in the Nezukonomor area. Additionally, “CHUMS RIDGE” (pictured), a new area set up in collaboration with the casual outdoor brand CHUMS, has opened around Hakuba Hitotoki-no-Mori.

The IWATAKE MTB PARK has a total of 7 courses including the Kamikaze Downhill Course (with a descent of 521m and a total length of 3.7km) and is already fully open, with the exception of the Mountain Cycling Course! I spoke with three visitors (pictured) from Matsumoto, Shiojiri, and Tatsuno, who told me, “We wanted to come out for the opening day! We bought season tickets and are planning to come back again during Golden Week.” Please note that the Mountain Cycling Course is closed due to the construction of the new gondola.
