Sunny skies yesterday and today marked a brief break in the middle of the rainy season. The Tsugaike ropeway was 50-70% of capacity for the first departure at 8:30 a.m., though the next departure at 8:40 seemed almost completely full. The lushl, fresh greenery (pictured) that greeted visitors exiting the summit station had many people commenting on how beautiful it was and how happy they were that they had come.

As I headed to the Tenbo Marsh at the far end of the park from the Ukishima Marsh, via the Yase-one Ridge, I watched as the thin clouds spread above me began to gradually thicken, reducing the amount of sunlight. Along the way I ran into a couple from Shiga Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! Yesterday we climbed to the top of Mt. Karamatsu in perfect weather. Today there are more clouds, but it’s still fortunate to have two straight days of good weather during the rainy season.

The blooming of the mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) in the Mizubasho Marsh area has almost come to an end, and now ryukinka (marsh marigold) are at their peak. Elsewhere, chinguruma (Aleutian avens) have begun to bloom in the Watasuge Marsh, while shinano kinbai (Japanese globeflower, pictured) are peaking in the Ukishima Marsh. Along the route between each area there were many other varieties of flowers blooming as well. [Tsugaike Nature Park・Ukishima Marsh]
In the areas between the Yase-one Ridge, Tenbo Marsh, and Mousen Pond, I also came across maizuruso (false lily of the valley), mitsuba oren (threeleaf goldthread), gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood), hakusan kozakura, and sarasadodan (redvein enkianthus). The Tenbo Marsh’s observation deck (pictured) was a popular spot with people coming and going constantly, and the views of the three major Hakuba peaks from there were fantastic. The only remaining snow consisted of a few small sections from 4 to 5 meters in length each near the Fuketsu wind cave, in front of the Tenbo Marsh, and between the Ukishima Marsh and Yase-one Ridge.
