Tateyama REPORT

2023.06.27Kurobe Dam / Sunny

On 6/26 (Mon.), the Kurobe Dam began it’s annual water discharges which have become a famous tourist attraction. During the discharges, 15 tons of water per second spurt out from the top of the 186-meter-high dam, the tallest in Japan. Looking down from the top of the dam, you can observe a rainbow stretching across the Kurobe River and the mist rising up with the cool breeze; a spectacular scene that can only be experienced here.

I spoke with two visitors from Aomori Prefecture who told me, “This is our first visit to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The size of the dam is pretty overwhelming to witness for the first time.” In order to see the water discharge from as close as possible, visitors were making their way to the new observation plaza (pictured) and the water discharge viewing stage.

In the specially-prepared area inside the new observation plaza (pictured), there is a replica of the tunnel set used in the movie “Kurobe no Taiyo.” Photo panels showing what it was like at the time of construction are displayed, and at the far end, visitors can watch a video featuring people who were involved directly in the construction of the dam. In addition, many events will be held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Kurobe Dam this year.

At the Kurobedaira Alpine Botanical Garden (1,828 meters above sea level, free admission), located one level above the dam and reached by using the Kurobe Cable Car, nikkokisuge day lillies (pictured), tsumatoriso (artcic starflower), maizuruso (false lily of the valley), nanakamado (Japanewse rowan), iwakagami (fringed galax), mitsukashiwa (bogbean), and kuroyuri (chocolate lily) were at their flowering peak. Looking up at Tambo-daira, it seemed to be dyed completely in summer shades of green, with little lingering snow.
