Today I spoke with a guest who stayed overnight at Tsugaike Sanso last night who told me, “The rain stopped around dawn, so I went up to the Hakuba Oike alpine pond early this morning. The wind was strong enough to form ripples on the pond’s surface, but the sky was so clear that the heavy rain of last night seemed like a forgotten memory, and the views were absolutely fantastic.” When I began walking around the Tsugaike Nature Park at 9:00am, the bluen sky was still spreading in all directions.

Purple hiogi ayame (beachhead irises) were beginning to bloom in the Mizubasho Marsh along with nikkokisuge day lillies in the Watasuge and Ukishima marshlands. I had a chat with a woman strolling through the Ukishima Marsh with her camera in hand who commented, “I came here to take pictures of kobaiikeso (veratrum stamineum) and the mountains, but it turns out that there are not many kobaiikeso this year. There is however, a lot of watasuge (cottongrass, pictured), and they are beautiful!”

On the forested path running between and connecting the marshes, I found a lot of gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood), mitsuba oren (threeleaf goldthread), maizuruso (false lily of the valley), and nogo ichigo (fragaria iinumae, a variety of wild strawberry) in bloom. On the Yase-one Ridge, gunnai-furo (pictured) were swaying pleasantly in the cool breeze rising up from the valley to the south.
