Happo’s mountain climbing・trekking season officially kicked off today. The Happo Alpen Line is currently open on Saturdays and Sundays until 6/17 (Fri.), but is scheduled to operate daily between 6/18 (Sat.) and 11/6 (Sun.). Normal operation begins at 8:00, but early morning hours will be in effect daily from 7/9 (Sat.) to 8/28 (Sun.), and on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays between 9/17 (Sat.) and 10/16 (Sun.).

I spoke with a group of four from Saitama Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “The summer hiking season is finally here! We’re coworkers and are heading up together for a day-hike of Mt. Karamatsu. This pose is the “T” for tenki, since we’re hoping for clear skies.” The temperatures were in the single digits this morning and I noticed most people were decked out in warm jackets.

I noticed a man using a tripod to take pictures near the No. 3 Cairn (pictured), who mentioned, “I often come from Matsumoto to take pictures. I was afraid that this fog would prevent me from getting any shots, but at least I caught a glimpse of the three major Hakuba peaks.” As the mountains of the Ushiro-Tateyama Range peeked through the clouds, a chorus of voices could be heard exclaiming how beautiful and close they looked.

I talked with another group of four from Kanagawa Prefecture (pictured). They informed me that they were friends through cycling that had taken up hiking, and that they were hopeful they’d break through the clouds once they passed the Maruyama Cairn. I told them to be careful, particularly on the downhill, in the still snow-covered areas between the No. 2 Cair and Happo Cairn.
