In general, Hakuba has a relatively high amount of sunny days in the month of June, however, since the beginning of the rainy season on 6/6 (Mon.), the amount of sunshine this month has been less than average (by around 50%). Thanks to the cloudy sky and cool 16℃ temperature at 8:30 this morning, I was able to climb comfortably up to the Jizo Cairn. Yet as the terrain steepened and the wind was blocked as I entered the forest, I found myself sweating heavily.

The Mt. Kotomi trekking course was entirely free of snow all the way up to the summit of Mt. Kotomi (2,003m). However, there were 3 spots where snowmelt and rain had caused flows of mud and dirt to damage portions of the trail along the wooden walkway between Ichinose-kami and Ninose-kami, as well as the ridge trail just before the summit of Mt. Kotomi.

There were already a number of alpine plants in bloom along the trail. I specifically noticed the sarasadodan (pictured) and ookaminoki in the area between the Jizo Cairn and Mikaeri-zaka. Above Mikaeri-zaka the blooms of murasaki yashio-tsutsuji were especially pretty. There were also plenty of smaller flowers such as koiwakagami, tateyama rindo, tsumatoriso, and katakuri.

The Goryu Sanso mountain hut is scheduled to open on 6/25 (Sat.), and with the hut still closed there were relatively few hikers on the Mt. Kotomi Trekking Course this morning. For the upcoming summer season, all overnight stays in the hut and in the tent sites must be reserved in advance. In addition, Goryu’s Alps Tenbo Lift and Goryu Telecabine will also begin daily operation on 6/25 (Sat.).
