When visiting the Tsugaike Nature Park during the summer, it is reassuring to know that the Visitor Center is a safe and comfortable place to take shelter during the occasional rain shower or afternoon thunderstorm. The free tea and water dispenser in the library area (pictured, paper cups available), which had been unavailable during the height of the pancemic, reopened in July of this year. Furthermore, the tables and chairs in the Tsugaike Theater area are available to those who want to rest or have a place to eat their packed lunch. (*You must take all of your garbage home with you, and no stoves or open flames are allowed.)

In one corner of the Visitor Center, original Tsugaike Nature Park branded bottles (pictured, 620 ml, JPY4,290) from the popular outdoor company Columbia are available for sale. The bottle has a large 4.5 cm mouthpiece with a simple screw-on cap that makes it easy to drink and also to wash. In addition, Tsugaike Nature Park hats (JPY2,530) and t-shirts (JPY3,850 to JPY3,960) can also be purchased.

The skies above the Tsugaike Nature Park were clear at around 7:00 am, but clouds rolled in and hung above the area by 9:00 am as the first visitors began to appear. The temperature was a cool and comfortable 18°C, especially since the clouds effectively blocked any direct sunlight. The Mizubasho, Watasuge, and Ukishima marsh areas were starting to turn a slight shade of yellow as summer is slowly drawing to an end.

Evidence of the changing seasons could also be seen in the alpine flora. Iwashobu (triantha Japonica, pictured) was blooming in abundance along the side the path, but had begun to change from its summer white to pink and red. Throughout the Mizubasho and Ukishima marshes, the purple color of the oyama rindo (gentiana makinoi) flowers seemed to be a deeper, more intense shade, while various berries could also be seen.
