Skies were clear today for the first time since 10/2 (Sun.), a period of 9 days. Over the last 5 days of continuously rainy and cloudy weather, including the 3-day weekend, the total number of sunshine hours registered at only 9% of normal. Overall the fall foliage within the Tsugaike Nature Park is past peak, though the brilliant red and orange leaves of the Sarasadodan (Enkianthus campanulatus, pictured here and in the 2nd photo) could still be spotted along the Yase-one ridge where autumn colors are progressing slower than usual.

The colorful climax of the Sarasadodan should continue for around another week. Looking down from the Yase-one ridge in the direction of the south-facing slope, the autumn leaves in the vicinity of the Karimata-ike and Tsugaike ponds were beautifully vibrant. I also spotted a rich gradation of colors amongst the Okamenoki (Viburnum furcatum) trees standing in the area between the Yase-one ridge and the Ukishima Shitsugen.

The slopes leading down from the apex of the high Northern Alps ridgeline featured more bright yellow from the leaves of the Dakekanba (Erman’s birch, pictured) than what was present amongst the trees directly surrounding the marshlands of the Nature Park, and I found my eyes instinctively gazing upward in their direction each time the sun shone. Spotting a waterfall nicely contrasted against the mountainside, I stopped for a while to listen to the sounds of its distant flow.

It was a brisk 8℃ this morning, and a rather strong wind was blowing intermittently from the southwest. My exposed hands grew numb from the cold while holding my camera, and I realized that I should bring at least a light pair of gloves during my next visit. In other news, from today until the end of the green season on 10/23 (Sun.), the Tsugaike Ropeway will start operation at 8:00 each morning.

*Currently, repair work is underway on a 120-meter section of wooden boardwalk on the eastern side of the Watasuge Shitsugen. As of 10/14, the project is scheduled to be completed in around 10 days, but the new boardwalk will be unveiled to the public next year after the spring snowmelt.
