The “Shonan @ Hakuba” event is taking place at the HAKUBA MOUNTAIN BEACH on 8/26 (Sat.) and 8/27 (Sun.) Three DJs are helping host the event, with DJ Tossy playing a selection of mainly Japanese songs from the 80s and onward intended to invoke a feeling of nostalgia, followed by Junsho Shaku whose set list consists of Shonan-inspired songs. Last up is Jun’ichi Miyaji, known for coming up with the name of the famous band name Southern All Stars, whose western playlist was chosen to match the mood of the outdoor venue.

Various event-themed items are also on sale, including: sandals (pictured, JPY3,300〜JPY5,000) and postcards (JPY200), as well as t-shirts (pictured, JPY3,500) and Japanese tenugui hand towels (pictured, JPY1,000 yen) designed by Tetsuya Kitada, creator of the character P-chan as featured in the children’s TV show Ponkickies.

I spoke with the father of a family from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We come out to Hakuba every year. We were thinking it was probably our last chance for the summer, so this morning we climbed up to Happo-ike for the first time this year. Yesterday we had fun mountain biking at the National Alps Azumino Park (Omachi/Matsukawa area).” In other news, other event entertainment on 8/26 (Sat.) includes a talk event hosted by Noriyasu Kunori at 2:00 p.m., and a live musical performance by Daisuke Katayama at 6:30 p.m.

Even after the end of the Obon holiday period, the Happo-One Nature Trail seemed to be as popular as ever, with many hikers continuing past the Happo-ike pond in the direction of Mt. Karamatsu. Currently, due to a lack of water, the public toilets near the No. 2 Cairn and next to the Happo-ike Sanso mountain hut are out of service. As such, the restrooms at the Alpen Quad landing area (inside the building housing Restaurant Pilar) are the last on the mountain.
