A series of events coinciding with the advent of the fall season on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route are set to begin on 9/9 (Sat.). However, today, a mere 11 days before, the Ogisawa, Kurobe Dam, Kurobedaira, and Tanbodaira (pictured) were still covered with lush green foliage and marked by impressive summer scenery. The ride on the Tateyama ropeway was very pleasant with a cool, refreshing breeze coming in through the windows.

Skies were clear and I could see Mt. Jodo (pictured, top center) and Mt. Ryuo (pictured, to left), both of which I climbed last summer. Late summer alpine flowers such as oyama rindo (pasture gentian) and yamahahako (pearly everlasting) were in full bloom around the Murodo Terminal, and miyama akinokirinso (European goldenrod) and miyama senkyu (eastern hemlock parsley) were blooming between Tateyama Murodo and Ichinokoshi.

When I arrived at 10:00 a.m., Ichinokoshi (pictured) was crowded with climbers taking a rest before tackling the steep rocky climb to the summit of Mt. Oyama. I was wary of the clouds rising up quickly from the valley to the east of the Tateyama mountain range, and hoped to reach the summit before the weather and views worsened, so I began the climb up immediately without stopping for a break.(*Continued from Vol.2)
