Located inside the boundaries of the Chubu-Sangaku National Park, and at an elevation of around 1,900 meters, the Tsugaike Nature Park is a famous sport for viewing spectacular autumn foliage. Currently, the leaves have begun to change and are around 50% of their peak, which is right about average for this time of year. With that, the fall colors are expected to reach their peak between now and early October. Overnight and early morning temperatures dropped quite low, and some of the wooden boardwalks were covered in a thin layer of frost before the park opened. As visitors began to arrive in the morning, I noticed that some were even wearing gloves (pictured).

As I progressed through the park, I noticed that some of the nanakamado (Japanese rowan) and okame-no-ki (viburnum furcatum) trees had turned a vibrant shade of red (pictured). On the trail that travels directly between the Ukishima Marsh and the Yase-one Ridge, I saw a large number of red berries clinging to the stems of the many gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood) that line the path. Approaching the Tenbo Marsh at the extreme end of the park, signs of fall pervaded both the scenery, and the air.

At the Tenbo Marsh (pictured), the autumn colors have grown more intense for both the low-lying grasses and shrubs, and the surrounding trees. The same could be said for the grass and foliage in the Mizubasho Marsh, Watasuge Marsh, and Ukishima Marsh. I have sweated a lot in the summer heat throughout the course of reporting on the Nature Park over the last few months, but this time the fall-like temperatures made things a lot more comfortable.

The Yase-one Ridge area (pictured) is still predominantly green, and retains the look and feel of late summer. During the peak of the autumn foliage season, the panoramic view looing out across the Tsugaike Nature Park from the open area at the right side of the stairs is breathtaking. Personally, I also always look forward to seeing the bright red shades of sarasadodan (redvein enkianthus) at the end of the autumn season (i.e., around the three-day holiday weekend in October).
