When heading toward the Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort from the Toyota Iiyama Interchange, if you park your car at the Hana-no-Eki Chikuma-gawa Roadside Station and head down to the banks of the Chikuma River, you’ll be greeted by fields of blooming yellow rapeseed flowers (nanohana, pictured). Incidentally, Hana-no-Eki Chikuma-gama, along with Wada-juku Station, is the newest roadside station in Nagano Prefecture, having reopened after a full remodel last November.

I visited at 6:40 a.m., when the flowers were glistening with morning dew and sparkling in the morning sunlight, and I overheard people commenting on how beautiful the scene was. You can explore the vast fields of flowers on foot, or by renting a bicycle from the Roadside Station Hana-no-Eki Chikuma-gawa.

The fields of yellow flowers shrouded in the fog were also fantastically beautiful. From 5/3 (Fri.) to 5/5 (Sun.), the Iiyama Nanohana Park, located on the eastern bank of the Chikuma River opposite the roadside station, will host the ‘Iiyama Nanohana Flower Festival.’ The festival will feature numerous stalls and events, including a local music festival.
