In a period of less than a month, since the ski resort’s last day of business on 5/6 (Mon., holiday), the foothills and now also the mountainsides are covered in spring green. Starting today, 6/1 (Sat.), Hakuba Goryu’s early summer season operation began, and during this time, the Goryu Telecabin and ALPS360 will open on Saturdays and Sundays only until 6/16 (Sun.) (*The Tenbo Lift and Escal Plaza will open on 6/22 (Sat.), the first day of regular summer operation.)

The Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden has many alpine plants that reach their peak during the early opening period. Currently, at the upper portion of the rock garden, shinano kinbai (Japanese globeflower) and hakusan ichige (narcissus anemone) are in full bloom. Other plants that can be seen in the park now include chinguruma (Aleutian avens), obaki sumire (viola brevistipulata), sankayo (skeleton flower), and a few uruppuso (weaselsnout) and komakusa (dicentra peregrina).

In the beech forest on the east side of the lower part of the rock garden, shirane-aoi (Japanese wood poppy) and kinugasaso (Paris Japonica) were blooming beautifully. There were also some rare white flowers of both species in small numbers. In the Swiss Alps and Himalayan area, Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasqueflower), iwayatsude (red leafed mukdenia), and more were in bloom.

A guided flower tour (pictured) was taking place at 10:00 a.m. (Tour held twice a day at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., JPY1,000 for adults, JPY500 for Elementary School Students and younger, includes miniature flower book.) Alpine plant seedings were on sale In front of ALPS360, alpine plant seedlings were on sale, as well as sasadango dumplings, and free Japanese primrose seedlings were being handed out. Incidentally, it is possible to reach as far as the Jizo Cairn without encountering any remaining snow.

*There is free parking for 1,500 cars around the Goryu Telecabin base station, enough that the parking lot is never full, even during the busy summer Obon holiday season. Escal Plaza will be open daily from 6/22 (Sat.) to 10/20 (Sun.).
*Night gondola service will be offered from 8/10 (Sat.) to 8/12 (Mon.).
