With the Tsugaike Ropeway (gondola + ropeway) beginning operation on 6/1 (Sat.), two days earlier than last year, the summer season in Chubu-Sangaku National Park’s Tsugaike Nature Park has officially begun! Coinciding with the park’s opening, the Tsugaike Nature Park Mizubasho (Asian skung cabbage) Festival is being held over two days, on 6/1 (Sat.) and 6/22 (Sun.), in front of the gondola Sanroku (base) Station.

Today I spoke with a couple from Osaka (pictured), who said, “Oh, are you with Snownavi? We love your site! We timed our visit for the opening day today. Yesterday we did some “shower climbing” and today we’ll see how far we can go, but we’re aiming for the Tenbo Marsh.” Snow still covers the route between the Mizubasho and Watasuge marshes, but the wooden boardwalk was exposed beyond that.

The mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) in the Mizubasho Marsh as well as in the Watasuge Marsh were blooming nicely. The peak bloom is expected to be around 6/8 (Sat.) to 6/9 (Sun.) in both marsh areas. I had a conversation with a photographer from the town of Ikeda, who told me they were a fan of Snownavi, and added, “The mizubasho are so beautiful. I’m glad I came today.”

There was still a lot of lingering snow past the bridge over the Kusu River, and as such, waterproof or water-resistant trekking shoes are recommended until mid-June. Going back to earlier in the day, I came across skeleton flowers (sankayo, pictured) on the way from the Tsugaike gondola summit station to the Tsugaike ropeway base station, whose petals had turned transparent due to being saturated with the morning dew.
