The amount of cars on the roads at the foot of the mountains has noticeably increased during the weekends with the start of summer operations at Happo, Tsugaike, and Goryu on 6/1 (Sat.). With that said, however, it’s not enough to cause any real congestion, and the area should remain traffic jam-free until the Marine Day holiday weekend (7/13 to 15). The Skyark Deck Cafe (pictured), which served as the stage during the YOO-HOO! Festival, is now covered with a new, sturdy tarp.

Today I tried out the Skyark Deck Cafe’s “Kawanakajima White Peach Puree” drink (pictured), made with white peaches grown in Nagano City’s Kawanakajima area. It was pleasantly smooth and moderately sweet, almost like nectar. As for lunch options, I had a hard time choosing between the “Black Curry with Japanese Lamb” from the Skyark Deck Cafe, a croissant sandwich from THE CITY BAKERY, a tea and scone set from CHAVATY HAKUBA, or the daily Shinshu vegetable plate or BBQ from Soup Stock Tokyo & Hakuba DELI.

I caught up with a couple from Toyama Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We’ve been to the Hakuba area to ski in winter, but this is our first time in summer. We’re about to ride the YOO-HOO! Swing.” In other news, Iwatake’s opening hours will be changed on 6/11 (Tue.), due to an equipment inspection requiring a power shut down. Please see the official website for details.

At the foot of the mountain, the Hakuba Iwatake MTB PARK’s pump track (pictured) has been improved and is also now larger. The track is fun for getting speed and warming up even with full-suspension mountain bikes! The 4th installment of the DOWNHILL SERIES is set to take place at Iwatake on 6/15 (Sat.) and 6/16 (Sun.).
