This morning I spoke with a man from Hakuba Village (pictured, center) who told me he was a fan of Snownavi, before adding, “I brought my chain spikes and am hoping to reach the summit of Mt. Karamatsu, but will go as far as I can.” The two people pictured to his left seemed to be unusually outfitted, and it turned out that they were some of the film crew for the TV drama “Mountain Doctor,” which is set to air on 7/8 (Mon.). I also chatted briefly with a couple (pictured), also from Hakuba, who commented, “We felt pretty hot when stopped at the Shakuji Cairn, but as we climbed up to the Happo-ike pond, the chilly wind made us put on our jackets.” Incidentally, the surface of Happo Pond (pictured) is only about 30% visible, as the rest is still covered in snow. From this point on to the Shita-no-Kanba forest area, a strong, cold westerly wind was blowing intermittently across the ridge.

The delicate yellow flowers of kumoma sumire (pictured) and pink iwakagami were starting to bloom around the No. 3 Cairn, and yukiwariso were peaking around the Happo Pond. Watasuge (cotton grass) was also visible in the Kama-ike Marsh area, and other flowers could also be seen along the first part of the wooden boardwalk course. As was the case during my previous visit, the small blue-ish flowers known as Tateyama rindo were in full bloom along the entire nature trail.

I ran into a staff member working on the Happo Alpine Line (pictured), who told me, “I like the view of the Happo Pond from the area just before the Shita-no-Kanba forest area, so I’m heading up there now.” Another regular visitor I often run into told me, “I was traveling in Egypt until the day before yesterday, so today is my first climb of the season. Oh, also, check this out… the remaining snow patch on Hakuba Yari looks like a gorilla turned sideways.”
