The temperature this week has been consistently high as the rainy season has yet to arrive. However, the mountains in the morning are very refreshing with temperatures below 20°. As I got off the Grat Quad and started walking on the Mountain Climbing Course (pictured), the wind blowing up from the foot of the mountain felt cool and comfortable, despite the strong sunlight on my back.

I spoke with a photographer from the town of Ikeda in Nagano Prefecture, who greeted me and said, “I’m going to photograph the flowers blooming between the upper and lower forest areas.” Another hiker living in Hakuba Village commented, “I love your site. I often had my picture taken by Snownavi at Sanosaka during the ski season. Today I’m here to participate as an extra in a TV show.”

I had another conversation with a father and son from Saitama Prefecture (pictured). The father told me, “We took advantage of a school holiday to come and climb up to Happo Pond. The weather is beautiful and the air feels so good. The son added, “The stairway section was hard.” There were fantastic views of the three main Hakuba peaks to the west, the Kaerazu-no-ken (pictured) in front of me, and Mt. Goryu and Mt. Kashimayari to the south.

The snow covering the Happo Pond had melted quite a bit since my last visit, and now covered roughly 40% of the surface. The yukiwariso that had been blooming around the pond were now in their final stages, and many kumamo sumire were blooming on slope on the pond side of the No. 3 Cairn. In addition, the small white flowers of iwa-shimotsuke were beginning to bloom around the Happo Cairn.
