Tsugaike REPORT

2024.06.19Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

It was the clearest morning of the season so far, with bright blue skies spreading above, and the temperature in front of the Tsugaike Visitor Center at 8:50 a.m. had already reached 15.5℃. In the Mizubasho and Watasuge marsh (pictured) areas, the fields of mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) had faded from the landscape and chinguruma (Aleutian avens) had begun to bloom in their place.

Various yellow flowers such as ryukinka (marsh marigold), shinano kinbai (Japanese globeflower), and miyama kinpoge (meadow buttercup) stood out along the route traveling on the Northern Alps side of the Ukishima Marsh. Along the path connecting the various marsh areas, I also spied many sankayo (skeleton flowers), kinugasaso (Paris Japonica), and komiyama katabami (wood sorrel) in bloom. In addition, shirane-aoi (Japanese wood poppy, pictured) had begun to bloom in the shade of the trees in front of the Ukishima Marsh.

The only areas where the trail had lingering snow were around the Fuketsu wind cave, a portion of the route between the Ukishima Marsh and the Ginmeisui spring, and a spot just before reaching the Tenbo Marsh, all of which could be cleared even with sneakers. In the Ukishima Marsh, Tateyama rindo (gentiana thunbergii) were blooming here and there among the green leaves of iwa-icho (deer cabbage).

On the Yase-one Ridge (pictured), the cool breeze blowing up from the slopes to the south felt wonderful and helped to keep me cool. At the lookout point at the top of the wooden staircase, it felt as if I had the Hakuba Sanzan (the three main Hakuba peaks) all to myself. The trail leading from the Yase-one Ridge to the Tenbo Marsh was lined with plenty of gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood), maizuruso (false lily of the valley), and mitsuba oren (threeleaf goldthread).
