Exercise in the great outdoors is always fun, and Iwatake offers a range of activities from more serious pursuits like mountain biking, trekking, and the Hakuba EX Adventure obstacle course, to casual options such as swings, horseback riding, mountain carts, a sky trampoline, disc golf, and teqball. I spoke with a father from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, left), who told me, “My son is in the 5th grade, and he placed 6th in the “Kid’s Hi Class” as part of the DOWNHILL SERIES held on Saturday and Sunday. We’re already planning to enter again next year.”

Disc golf (pictured, free of charge) was introduced last year within the CHUMS RIDGE area, and as the name implies, is a sport in which players compete to throw frisbees into a designated target. Teqball is best described as a combination of soccer and table tennis (also free to play), that uses a ping-pong-like table, and requires players to hit a soccer ball with their feet and heads.

In addition, there are two free dog runs near the Iwatake summit area. At the dog run near the entrance to Nezuko-no-mori, I came across two dogs who were playing there; Arare-chan (white) and Mona-chan (black). I spoke with their owner, from Aichi Prefecture, who told me, “We have been coming here to play several times every year for the past three years. Arare is only four months old, and was afraid of the gondola.”

This morning, a cool northerly breeze was blowing at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR. I had a brief chat with a mother from Hyoko Prefecture (pictured, background), who commented, “I come to Nagano Prefecture once a month. Today we changed our plan, and instead of climbing Mount Harinoki, we came to Iwatake for the first time.” In other news, “Hakubajazz Experience Harmony in Iwatake” will be held on 6/19 (Wed.) and 6/25 (Tue.) at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the back of the beech forest.
