The Hakuba Cortina English Garden consists of 15 distinct garden areas, from the “Entrance Garden” to the “Secret Garden” (pictured) at the far end. Today, 6/16 (Sun.), garden designer Mark Chapman gave a free guided tour of the gardens. (*The admission fee of ¥500 was required.)

After sitting on a bench in the shade in front of the reception desk and listening to the gardner talk about how he got involved with the garden, the type of soil he often uses, and his ideas on how to prevent pumice stone and soil from mixing, we entered the garden and proceeded further in, where he explained about the types of plants and flowers as well as the stones and rocks used. The weather was a mix or rain showers and sunshine, which allowed us to appreciate the freshness of the plants and flowers.

About 30% of the roses, the mainstay of the garden, were in bloom overall. This morning, the Fransois Dubreuil (pictured), Munstead Wood, and Coup de Coeur varieties were at their peak. The climax of the rose season starts in late June, which coincides with the rainy season, but umbrellas are available at the hotel front desk and the park is well maintained, so it’s easy to keep your shoes clean and enjoy the garden any time of year.

In addition to roses, Geranium Sanguineum, German Iris, Wood Avens, Lupine, Rodger’s Bronze-Leaf, and Oriental poppies were in bloom. Now, 11 years after its opening in 2013, the garden has matured greatly, and is managed and maintained with the same respect for the natural cycle as any authentic English traditional garden.
