Tateyama REPORT

2024.06.26Kurobe Dam / Sunny

From Ogisawa Station, the entrance to the Nagano side of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the Kurobe Dam is only 16 minutes away by Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus. Today, I got off the bus and went up to the Dam Observation Deck, the highest point of the Kurobe Dam, and then took the somewhat thrilling outer stairs (pictured) to the New Observation Plaza.

After enjoying Kurobe Dam’s famous sightseeing water discharge, which started on 6/26 (Wed.), from the water discharge viewing stage located midway along the external staircase, I continued on and experienced the power and spray of the water at the Rainbow Terrace (pictured) located in the new observation area. With the sun shining this morning, I was also able to see a double rainbow from the top of the dam.

Many people are likely curious about how Japan’s tallest dam (186 meters) was constructed in a location surrounded by 3,000-meter mountains. A visit to the replica tunnel set and the footage used in the movie ‘Kurobe no Taiyo’ at the new observation area can help you understand the construction process.

The sightseeing boat on Lake Kurobe, known as Garube, will end its long service this season. As a result, various plans are in preparation to commemorate and celebrate the occasion through the “Garube Last Year Campaign.” Currently you can get a commemorative badge when you buy a ticket for the boat (pictured, optional, while supplies last.)
