Tsugaike REPORT

2024.07.02Tsugaike Nature Park / Cloudy

The Tsugaike Nature Park is very uncrowded on weekdays during the rainy season, and the fresh summer green is so beautiful that I had to go and report on it. The blue sky that was visible early was gradually hidden by clouds as the morning progressed, and by the time I arrived at the Tsugaike Visitor Center at 8:45am, the sun was mostly obscured and the park cast into shade.

Along the route on the Northern Alps side of the Ukishima Marsh, there were many shinano kinbai (Japanese globeflower) and miyama kinpoge (meadow buttercup) in bloom. I spoke with a photographer from the town of Ikeda in Nagano Prefecture, whom I originally met on the first day of business this summer, and was told, “The shinano kinbai here are a deeper yellow than in other places.”

This year seems to be a good year for watasuge cotton grass, just as it was for mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage), and many white tufts of cotton grass could be seen in the Mizubasho Marsh, Watasuge Marsh, and Ukishima Marsh (pictured). Many iwa-icho (deer cabbage), nikkokisuge day lilies and kobaiikeso (Veratrum stamineum) were also visible in each marsh area.

Kinugasaso (Paris Japonica), ko-iwakagami (fringed galax), shirane-aoi (Japanese wood poppy), gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood), mitsuba oren (threeleaf goldthread), and nogo-ichigo wild strawberries were in bloom along the routes connecting the various wetlands. Enreiso (trillium) and ohyotanboku were also in bloom, although in smaller numbers. In other news, the Tsugaike Ropeway will celebrate its 30th anniversary on 7/20 (Sat.).
