Since the beginning of the month, Hakuba has had 1.2 times more precipitation than the average amount for July. However, on the first day of the three-day weekend, skies were clear and the morning temperature at Iwatake was a very pleasant 20°C. Today, 7/13 (Sat.), THE CITY BAKERY (pictured, left) marked the beginning of sales of cold drinks perfect for summer, including the CB Cookie Chocolate Mint Shake (until September 18th) and Fresh Mint Soda (until August 31st).

Parents and children could be seen enjoying the easy-to-operate Mountaincart (pictured) that descend the mountain and are controlled by simply using the brakes and steering wheel. The 1.4-kilometer-long course that stretches all the way to Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori travels over a variety of surfaces including dirt, concrete, and gravel, and offers plenty of excitement. Incidentally, the trail next to the mountain cart course that features banks and jumps is for mountain bikes only.

The summit area’s air-conditioned SKYARK Cafe has a pet-friendly area at the far right as you enter. There I spoke with a couple from Toyama Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “This is our first time in Hakuba, and we’re impressed with Iwatake so far. We’re getting ready to take Elle (pictured, left) and Milk (pictured, right) to HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR.” SKYARK also offers a special pet menu that includes several variations of steamed Nagano-raised chicken and vegetables (JPY450 to JPY1,000).

This morning there was a line for the Yoo-Hoo! Swing (pictured) right from the time it opened at 9:00. During busy periods, such as three-day weekends or the summer Obon holiday period, it’s possible to purchase tickets in advance for a specific time slot from the vending machine at the guide center to reduce your waiting time. The same goes for Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori’s Hakuba Giant Swing.
