As the blue sky spread out above for the first time since 7/13 (Sat.), the shining sun felt hot (pictured). The rainy season has officially ended in the Kanto-Koshin region, doing so one day earlier than normal and four days earlier than last year. I spoke with two people from Kanagawa Prefecture, whom I met first thing in the morning, who told me, “We are going to camp overnight at the Goryu Sanso mountain hut, and climb up to the summit of Mt. Goryu tomorrow. But, it’s really hot, isn’t it?”

There are a wide variety of alpine plants blooming within the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden, and I was particularly attracted by the orange blossoms of the kuruma-yuri (pictured). The peak of the nikkokisuge day lillies has now passed, and yanagi-ran (fireweed) had taken center stage. In addition, the Himalayan blue poppy, takane-nadeshiko, ibuki jako-so, kugai-so, and yamaruri torano (pictured, fourth photo) were also looking great.

Before long, the Alps-Daira Nature Trail and the Alpine Botanical Garden were covered with fog coming up from the foot of the mountain that rolled in and out constantly. Around the Jizo Marsh and Jizo Cairn, kokemomo (Lingonberry) and akabana shimotsuke-so (Filipendula multijuga var. ciliata) had begun to bloom. I chatted with a hiker who greeted me good morning, and before disappearing in the fog, added, “I’m doing a one-day hike of Mt. Goryu today.”

I was sweating as I hurriedly climbed up Mikaeri-zaka in an effort to keep up with him, however, the cool breeze blowing across the Mikaeri-zaka deck felt great and cooled me down. (*I changed clothes so I wouldn’t get too cold from sweat.) I was also happy to have the cold hand towel that the staff gave me when I boarded the Goryu Telecabin on the way back.
