Tsugaike REPORT

2024.07.22Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

The Tsugaike Nature Park is an especially beautiful shade of green this summer. It was so hot across Nagano Prefecture today, 7/22 (Mon.), that a heat stroke alert was issued, but even still it felt cool here at an altitude of around 2,000m despite the intense sun. I spoke with a couple from Chiba Prefecture whom I met first thing in the morning, and was told, “This is our second visit to the Tsugaike Nature Park. It is beautiful this time of year with so many flowers in bloom.”

I always take a break in front of the Fuketsu wind cave, and today I overheard saying things like, “Wow, it’s so cool! It’s like being in a refrigerator.” In the Mizubasho Marsh area, hiogi ayame (iris setosa), watasuge (cotton grass) and kuruma-yuri lillies were in peak bloom. A staff member at the visitor center commented, “This year is a good one for blue flowers such as hiogi ayame and Tateyama rindo (Gentiana thunbergii).”

Many momiji karamatsu (false bugbane) and miyama toki (angelica acutiloba) were in full bloom between the Kusu River and Ukishima Marsh, while Hakusan furo geraniums (pictured), Shinano otogiri, and ibuki toranoo (bistort) were beginning to bloom. The nikkokisuge day lillies in the Watasuge Marsh and Ukishima Marsh were past their peak, but the white fluff of watasuge cotton grass remained impressive.

I had a conversation with a man from Nagano Prefecture, who said, “I wanted to go up to the Hakuba Oike area, but I couldn’t get a reservation at the Hakuba Oike Sanso hut, so today I’m just taking pictures around the park. I was able to capture a nice shot of watasuge swaying in the wind.” On several occasions, tufts of cotton grass were blown away by strong gusts, and the people who were around were excitedly watching and commenting as they were whisked away on the wind.
