2024.07.25Oyama (Vol. 2) / Partly Cloudy

On the rocky trail between Ichinokoshi and the summit of Mt. Oyama (pictured), the cloud cover rolled in and out as the southwesterly wind repeatedly changed in strength. There were many kumoma mimina-gusa and miyama daikon-so along the trail. Fortunately, the sun was almost completely hidden by the clouds, so I was able to make it up the climb without feeling too hot, even though it was so steep that I found myself using my hands.

I arrived at the Oyama Shrine (pictured), set atop the summit of Mt. Oyama, an hour and ten minutes after leaving Ichinokoshi. As the clouds parted and revealed blue skies, climbers taking a break in the area could be overheard excitedly commenting on the improved weather! Mt. Yarigatake, the Hotaka Range, and Mt. Jonen could be seen to the south, while Harinoki, Jiigatake, Kashimayari, and Mt. Goryu were visible to the east.

Next came the climax of the day’s hike. As I continued on the ridge beyond the summit of Mt. Oyama, the number of people decreased dramatically while the exposed terrain and atmosphere characteristic of a 3,000-meter-high ridge increased (pictured). Looking down at Murodo-daira, I could see the trail I had just hiked, along with the Mikuri-ga-ike Pond, and even the Sea of Japan beyond (pictured).

The rugged summit of Mt. Onanji (pictured, right) was only 20 minutes from the summit of Mt. Oyama, but that short walk along the ridgeline was one of the best moments of the entire summer for me so far. After returning to the shrine at the summit of Oyama, I had lunch and started my descent around 13:00. The sky was once more covered with clouds, and rain started falling at 14:30, just before I reached the Murodo Terminal.
