Tsugaike REPORT

2024.09.01Tsugaike Nature Park / Partly Cloudy

After a week of rainy weather, the landscape is looking more autumn-like at the Tsugaike Nature Park. I ran into a trail runner at the Tenbo Marsh (pictured), where I had hurried to get a view of the Hakuba Daisekke. In conversation he mentioned, “I didn’t think the weather would be this nice today. The Hakuba Daisekkei really looks to be in bad shape. Even from here you can see huge rocks lying on the snowfield.”

Along the path I saw many nanakamado (Japanese Rowan), okame-no-ki (viburnum furcatum), gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood), oba takeshima-ran (watermelon berry), kuromame-no-ki (bog bilberry) and akamono (gaultheria adenothrix) berries. Also, in the forested area that connects the Mizubasho Marsh and the Watatsuge Marsh, the beads of water from last night’s rain dripping from the kurotsuribana (euonymus tricarpus) berries (pictured) were beautiful.

I spoke with a pair of local siblings from Otari Village (pictured), who commented, “It’s a beautiful sunny Sunday, but we thought it might be relatively uncrowded because of the typhoon, so we decided to come to the Nature Park. The wind feels really good!” It was especially cool this morning, so much so that I started to get cold when I sat on the bench for a while. The low-lying iwa-icho (deer cabbage) has begun turning red in the marsh areas, and the flowers of iwashobu (triantha Japonica) were changing from white to pink.

The view from the Tsugaike Gondola (pictured) also looked a little less green, and a little more yellow than at the peak of summer. In other news, today, 9/1 (Sun.), marks the start of sales of Advance Discount Lift Tickets for the 2024-25 winter season at Tsugaike Mountain Resort. As an example, Adult 1-Day Tickets can be purchased for JPY5,500, instead of the usual JPY7,500 at the ticket window.
