Tsugaike REPORT

2024.09.05Tsugaike Nature Park / Partly Cloudy

Now is a great time to enjoy a walk through the Tsugaike Nature Park, as the marshlands have begun to change from green to yellow, and cool autumn breezes have begun to blow. The Nature Park is located at an altitude of 1,860 to 2,010 meters above sea level, and the season here is progress slightly faster than on the Happo-One Nature Trail (1,680 to 2,060m) and at the Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden & Alps-Daira Nature Trail (1,500 to 1,676m). On 9/5 (Thurs.), I took the gondola up into the clouds, and when I arrived at the Watasuge Marsh around 9:00 a.m., I was surprisingly greeted by a clear blue sky.

After enjoying a nice walk straight to the Yase-one Ridge at the far end of the park, the strong wind blowing up the south-facing slopes cooled my me down in an instant. Looking back towards the entrance of the Tsugaike Nature Park (pictured), the yellow hue of the Ukishima Marsh was particularly impressive. Around 10:00, the sun was blocked by the clouds that had started to gather higher up.

The leaves of nanakamado (Japanese rowan) and mine-kaede (butterfly maple) were starting to turn color starting from the lower aspect of the trees, which are less exposed to sunlight, and the green had started to fade from some momiji (Japanese maple, pictured) as well. At higher altitudes, some of the leaves of okame-no-ki (viburnum furcatum) and kuromame-no-ki (bog bilberry) had already turned a deep red color.

I spoke with two people from Nara Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “This is our first time at Tsugaike Nature Park. We checked the live camera in the morning and the weather looked good, so we hurried over to the Tenbo Marsh. The three main Hakuba peaks were hidden in the clouds, but we were able to see the ridgeline extending to the south, which was nice.” In other news the Tsugaike Ropeway (gondola + ropeway) will start operating at 7:00 am on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays until10/14 (Mon., public holiday).
