Tateyama REPORT

2024.09.06Mt. Jodo / Sunny

I reached the route to Mt. Jodo after walking back the way I came for 5 minutes from the Mt. Murodo observation point. Shortly after I found myself climbing up a boulder field with a decent gradient, and had to use my hands occasionally and watch my step carefully to avoid falling. Perhaps because it would be hard to descend this difficult section on tired legs, I never saw anyone coming down this way while I was on the way up.

After clearing the rocky area that took 30 to 40 minutes, I was rewarded with a refreshing ridge walk. The clouds were rising up from the valley to the northwest (pictured), but were simultaneously being pushed back by the wind blowing from the other side, so I was able to enjoy unobstructed views of Tateyama. Along the trail from Mt. Jodo to Ichinokoshi, the summer flowers iwagikyo (mountain harebell) and kumoma-minagusa were in full bloom.

I met a man from Osaka (pictured) who commented, “I camped at the Raicho-zawa campsite last night, and I got an early start today to climbing the peaks of Tateyama. I’m off to Ryuodake (pictured, right) now.” There were many people taking a break to enjoy the scenery and have their lunch at the southern peak of Mt. Jodo, where the ridgeline trail between Mt. Jodo and Mt. Ryuo meets the trail from Ichinokoshi.

About 10 minutes after starting my descent down from the southern peak of Mt. Jodo, I spotted a pair of Raicho (Rock Ptarmigan) in the shadows of the dwarf pines. A family (pictured) who had come up from the Ichinokoshi side were also delighted to have seen them. The father noticed me and asked if I was with Snownavi. He then told me, “I had my photo taken by Snownavi at a ski resort in Hakuba before. I’m really happy to have run into rock ptarmigans and a reporter from Snownavi today. My children have started to get restless, so we’re going to call it a day.”
