Today I spoke with a mother from Matsumoto (pictured), who told me, “The blue skies looked inviting, so I decided to make the trip out with my son. It’s such a beautiful day! We’re going to have lunch on the benches over there.” The temperature was just right, not too hot or cold, and I was able to walk around the park without feeling too tired.

Since our last report, the weather has been predominantly cloudy on the mountain. Typically, the Tsugaike Nature Park, which is located at an elevation of 1,900m to 2,000m, would have already entered the full-blown fall foliage season by late September, but the progress of the color change has been slow this year, and is still only 20% or so of peak. (*Last year on 9/24, the colors were already 50% of peak.) This year’s peak is expected to come around 10/5 (Sat.) to 10/6 (Sun.).

The autumn colors of the low-lying grass and shrubs in the Watasuge Marsh (pictured) and Ukishima Marsh were growing more vibrant and shining golden in the morning sunlight. I spoke with a staff member at the Tsugaike Visitor Center, who told me, “I think the best way to approach the Tenbo Marsh is to take the eastern route from the far end of the Ukishima Marsh and climb up via Yase-one Ridge, while taking your time to enjoy the view.”

They added, “We’ve begun using the fireplace since last week. The temperature difference from the base of the mountain to here is quite drastic this time of the year, and it can be colder than you might imagine on the mountain. Please be sure to bring warm layers such as a down jacket when you come to see the autumn leaves. The peak of the green season at the Chubu-Sangaku National Park’s Tsugaike Nature Park will soon be here!
