Tsugaike REPORT

2024.10.02Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

Today marked the second day in a row of clear skies. Today, the temperature at dawn inside the Tsugaike Nature Park dropped all the way down to 3℃ due to overnight radiative cooling, but rose sharply, and was at 19℃ by 9:00 a.m. The last day of business for the mountain huts at the entrance to the Nature Park is 10/20 (Sun.) for Tsugaike Hutte and 10/27 (Sun) for Tsugaike Sanso.

The Ukishima Marsh (pictured) is now approximately 60% of peak fall coloring, but was around 80% already on this same day last year. There were still many deep reddish-purple patches of colorful kuromame-no-ki (bog bilberry) in both the Watasuge and Ukishima Marshes. The beautiful red berries of gozen tachibana (creeping dogwood) were noticeable in the area between the Kusunoki River and the Tenbo Marsh.

The trees covering the slopes of Mt. Korenge (pictured) are turning more colorful day by day, and are one of the attractions of fall in Tsugaike. I found myself turning my camera in that direction more on this particular visit. The yellow splashes of dakekanba (Erman’s birch) trees was accented nicely with other reds, oranges against the green of bamboo grass, creating the unique autumn landscape that can only be seen in the mountains. I enjoyed the fact that the nanakamado (Japanese rowan) and kaede maple trees were turning color at different rates depending on their location in the park.

On 10/5 (Sat.) and 10/6 (Sun.), as well as during the three-day weekend from 10/12 (Sat.) to 10/14 (Mon.), the gondola will start operating at 7:00 a.m. Also, the 21st Annual “Otari Shin-Soba Matsuri” will be held across Otari Village starting on 10/5 (Sat.). You can enjoy the autumn colors in the morning and then indulge in soba noodles made from the freshly-harvested buckwheat at lunchtime – an excellent way to appreciate the dynamism of fall.
