It was a quintessential fall day with a cool autumn breeze and warm, pleasant sunshine. While the ridgeline of the Northern Alps was shrouded in clouds, the sky to the east was clear and blue. I spoke with a couple from Tokyo (pictured, background) who told me, “Iwatake is our dog Goma-chan’s favorite place, and we’ve been here before three or four times already. She’s in her nap mode right now.”

At the summit area’s Guide Center, discounted “Activity Packages” are on sale and valid on weekdays until 11/8 (Fri). One package includes unlimited rides on the Yoo-hoo! Swing, Hakuba Giant Swing (pictured), and Mountain Carts, as well as one ride each on the Hitotoki Downhill and Buggy Cruise. The normal cost to do each of these activities once is ¥7,000, but the discounted activity pack is available for only ¥5,000. There are also other options such as the “Mountain Cart + Hakuba Giant Swing Set”, “Mountain Cart + Hitotoki Downhill Set”, and “Mountain Cart Multi-Use Discount Tickets”.

The leaves of beech, oak and maple trees had started to turn yellow, while the leaves of maple and Japanese sumac had started to turn red at the top of Iwatake and in the Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori area. HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR (pictured), is usually not very busy first thing in the morning, and I was able to enjoy the scenery at my leisure. After 9:00, more people started to arrive, and a line of people began to form at the end of the terrace to take photos.

I had a conversation with two people from Osaka (pictured), and was told, “We came to Hakuba yesterday and are staying for a total of 3 days. Osaka is still hot, but Hakuba is wonderfully cool! In fact, it’s quite cold in the mornings and evenings, so we have to be careful not to catch a cold.” In other news, starting tomorrow, 10/12 (Sat.), the tents, tarps, tables and chairs at the “Mori-no-office” will be replaced with THE NORTH FACE products.
