Summer Info
This is the final installment of this summer’s Hakuba Goryu trekking reports, which began on 6/1 (Sats) when business opened for the green season. The base area felt a little gloomy due to the low-lying clouds, but things began to clear as I gained altitude, and at the Acorn Lookout I was greeted by a wonderful sea of clouds (pictured). Even from there, I could see the vivid autumn colors around the Alps-Daira Nature Trail. (The white building on the right is the Line-8 Summit Station. While at Hakuba Goryu Alpine Botanical Garden, I overheard people exclaiming how beautiful the scenery was as they admired the changing colors of the surrounding area. After walking up the hill for about 15 minutes, I arrived at the Jizo Cairn. Although the sky had started to cloud over, the red leaves on the slope in front of me and the rugged peaks of the Northern Alps formed a beautiful contrast along the Alps-Daira Nature Trail (see photo).

I spoke with a couple from Gunma Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “We came today to avoid the crowds over the three-day weekend. The autumn leaves are so beautiful!” It was really nice walking through the fiery-colored leaves. A hiker I met at Jizo-numa commented, “It seems like the best time to see the leaves has passed, but it’s still plenty beautiful.”

The changing leaves are creeping further down the mountain as the days go by. The upper portion of the area along the Goryu Telecabin line should be at its best during the last weekend of the season, from 10/19 (Sat.) to 10/20 (Sun.).
