Due to the cold air mass that made its way to Japan on 10/19 (Sat.), the first snowfall of the season was recorded in Hokkaido, and snow was also observed on some peaks in northern Japan. In Shinshu (Nagano), rime ice was seen on both the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range and in the higher elevation areas of Shiga Kogen on 10/20 (Sun.), but no snow has fallen yet. When I visited the Tsugaike Nature Park on the following day, 10/21 (Mon.), the wooden boardwalks were completely covered in frost (pictured).

I spoke to a hiker from Niigata, who told me, “I timed my visit for when the leaves of the dakekanba (Erman’s birch) would be falling. The green of the bamboo grass on the mountain slopes with splashes of red and yellow mixed in is a very beautiful sight.” I was particularly moved by the late autumn appearance of Mt. Korenge, beautifully contrasted against the cloudless sky.

The wave of peak autumn color is descending further and further down the mountain each day, and is currently most vibrant between the gondola mid-station and summit station (pictured). The Tsugaike Ropeway (Gondola + Ropeway) is offering free round-trip rides for children (elementary school and younger) until 11/4 (Mon., holiday). In addition, a Halloween event is being held on 10/26 (Sat.) and 10/27 (Sun.)!

Looking back earlier in the day, I met a group of four people (pictured) from Nagano’s Omachi City and Hakuba Village after enjoying the autumn leaves from the Yase-one Ridge, at the very end of the climb near the Tenbo Marsh. They told me they were fans of Snownavi, with one of them adding, “Last winter I was in one of your Goryu47 resort reports and I mentioned that I was looking for a boyfriend. I haven’t had any luck yet, but I’m still looking!” Anyway, thank you all very much for reading our Tsugaike trekking reports this summer!
