It was a cool and refreshing morning, and I spoke with a couple of visitors (pictured) from Nagano’s Ina and Matsumoto cities, who told me, “We’ve been to Iwatake three times before. The clouds are gathering and settling over the Hakuba peaks, but the early autumn colors are beautiful.” This year, the leaves have taken longer to change color and the first snow has come later than usual, so the peak of the autumn season is yet to come (*Check here to see the report from this day last year).

On 10/12 (Sat.), the tents, tarps, tables and chairs inside the “Mori-no-office” were replaced with THE NORTH FACE gear, and today many people could be seen relaxing in the area with a drink in hand. I caught up with two people from Chiba (pictured) there, who commented, “We’ve been glamping at From P HAKUBA since yesterday. The sauna and clean mountain air have made us feel refreshed! We already want to come back.”

There was already a line of visitors waiting for the Yoo-hoo! Swing before the 9:00 opening (pictured). The leaves were beginning to change color at the top of Iwatake, and were approximately 50 to 60% of their peak. Over at Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori and Nezuko-no-mori, they were 30 to 40%, and 30 to 50% respectively.

As the season changes and the temperature drops, it’s a great time to try Soup Stock Tokyo’s “Tokyo Samgyetang” (pictured, JPY700). This nourishing Korean ginseng chicken soup is easy to eat from a cup and has a rich yet subtle flavor (the red color is from goji berries). There are also other heart and body-warming soups, such as the most popular “Lobster Bisque” and “Tokyo Borscht,” which is only available in Hakuba.
