Tsugaike REPORT

2024.10.01Tsugaike Nature Park / Sunny

The autumn leaves in the Chubu-Sangaku National Park’s Tsugaike Nature Park are now approximately 50% of peak coloring. To coincide with the fall foliage season, Tsugaike Kogen is holding an “Autumn Foliage Week” event from 9/28 (Sat.) to 10/6 (Sun), featuring free commemorative photos shot with a Polaroid camera (starting at 9:00, limited to 400 photos), Alphorn performances, and more. Other facilities throughout the village of Otari are also offering special hospitality and services.

The morning of the first day of October brought clear blue skies. As I started my walk through the park, I soon found myself stopping in front of the beautiful red nanakamado (Japanese rowan, pictured), which were changing colors in the Watasuge Marsh area. By the time I reached the Tenbo Marsh, I had observed many trees still in the process of changing color, which had me looking forward to another visit.

On the circuit course around the Ukishima Marsh, the views in the direction of Mount Hakuba Norikura and Mount Korenge (pictured) were tinted with a beautiful fall shade of golden yellow, and were complimented by the Reddish-purple accents of the kuromame-no-ki (bog bilberry) throughout the Mizubasho, Watasuge, and Ukishima marshes. I also saw the iwashobu (triantha Japonica) that looked like dried red flowers.

Despite being a weekday, the Tenbo Marsh was very lively after 10:00 a.m. (pictured). However, clouds began to cover the ridge line around this time, and the sun was also hidden. The temperature can drop drastically in these situations at this time of year, so it is recommended to bring warm clothes such as a thin down jacket, fleece, and rain wear.
