It was a clear and sunny start to the final day of the November three-day weekend. At 8:30 a.m., the temperature at the top of Iwatake was a chilly 7℃, but with the sun shining and no wind at all, it didn’t feel that cold. There was an impressive number of visitors, and the CHAVATY HAKUBA terrace seats (pictured) were all full by around 10:00.

The autumn leaves had reached the bottom of the mountain, and the peak of the colors was around the bottom of the gondola. Along the 5sen South lift line to Hakuba Hitotoki-no-mori (pictured), red maple leaves remained, but the trunks of the beech and other deciduous trees became more noticeable as they continued to shed their foliage.

I spoke with the father of a family from Nagano City (pictured, right), who told me, “We come to Iwatake twice a year. My son, who loves vehicles of all types, was very excited to be able to ride the gondola and the lift.” He added, ”The gondola is going to be replaced with a new one in December, right? I’ll definitely have to bring my son here again!”

HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR was just as busy as CHAVATY HAKUBA, and there was a long line of people waiting to take photos from the deck that stretched all the way across the bridge at the entrance. According to the weather forecast, the coldest air of the season so far is expected to blow in on 11/6 (Wed.), and expectations are high for the first snowfall and the much-loved “three-tiered autumn leaves” phenomenon.
