You’ll find yourself wanting to stay a while longer at HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR (pictured) during the autumn foliage season. I, myself, have been here many times, but couldn’t help but vocalize my delight at seeing the mountainside dyed in beautiful autumn colors, as well as the expansive, up-close 3,000m ridgeline of the Northern Alps.

The undulating sea of autumn leaves spreading out towards Tsugaike (pictured) was also a sight to see. As more and more tourists arrived, I noticed some adjusting their positions and taking photos in all directions. The peak of autumn colors has come and gone in the beech forest around the top of Iwatake, but the red of maple leaves stood out.

The fall colors were at their best at the deepest part of the Nezuko-no-mori forest (pictured), which gently slopes down from the top of Iwatake. The pace of the maple trees shedding their leaves seemed to be slower than that of the other trees. The ground was a little soft due to the rain yesterday, but the fallen leaves made it possible to walk without getting your shoes too dirty.

The Hakuba Iwatake MTB PARK was also enveloped in the colors of autumn, and in some places the silver grass was swaying in the wind. I spoke to a group of five mountain bikers from Omachi, Hakuba, and Otari (pictured), with one of them telling me, “I come ride in the mornings on days when the weather is good, but I have to work in the afternoons!” On 11/4 (Mon.), an ‘Iwatake MTB Park Special Jump Session!’ will be held, using the large jump ramp that was built for a video featuring top riders from around the world.
