Brilliant white snow under vivid blue skies—that’s late April in Tateyama Murodo, one of the snowiest places on Earth. Despite the forecast calling for clouds, the sky cleared completely, and by around 9 a.m., it was already warm enough for me to take off my jacket before starting my walk. The popular Snow Corridor Walk drew such a large crowd that it opened 15 minutes early, at 9:15 a.m. (Murodo Terminal pictured, left & Mt. Tateyama, background)

The highest point of the snow wall (pictured) remained unchanged from opening day, standing at an impressive 1,600 cm. Many visitors could be seen walking along the road, touching the snow, and taking photos comparing the wall’s towering height to that of the buses passing by. As of today, 4/24 (Thu.), the snow depth in front of the Tateyama Center measured 680 cm.

Many people stopped to take a closer look at the Snow Calendar, an exhibit showing snowfall patterns and timing based on layers visible in a cross-section of the snow wall. The Panorama Road (the area of snow above the pavement where you can see many tiny figures on the right side of the photo) had a slightly soft, granular snow surface, but the snow was firm enough to walk on without sinking too deeply. (The Snow Corridor Walk runs through 6/25, while Panorama Road is open until 5/6.)

In addition to the highlights above, the “2025 Tateyama Kurobe Harutabi” event features several attractions in the Murodo area, including a snowplow display, a snow plaza and the Tateyama Snow Terrace. At Daikanbo, visitors can also enjoy the “Snow Pocket” and “Snow Tunnel.” Looking closely at the photo, you may be able to spot people enjoying backcountry skiing on the vast expanse of Tambo-daira spreading out below Daikanbo (pictured, bottom right).
