Spring skiing discounts started on 3/13, with 1-Day Tickets now ¥5,500 for adults, and ¥2,500 for elementary school students. This morning, the Riesen Slalom Course was groomed with a well-packed granular snow surface at the beginning of the run (pictured), and moderately soft, granular snow from the middle to the end of the course which sat in the morning sunlight. I gained plenty of speed as I cut through the cool air.

The groomed areas along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) and in the center of the Skyline Course had moderately firm, coarse snow conditions. A sea of clouds could be seen from Riesen Grat, which was entirely ungroomed, with a relatively flat and firm granular snow surface on the upper half, and a harpacked surface with undulations and bumps on the lower half.

Because of the long streak of warm and sunny weather that began on 3/3 (Fri.), and was only interrupted by rain on the mornings of 3/10 (Fri) and 3/13 (Mon.), snow is melting rapidly on the lower part of the resort, forcing the closure of the northern part of the Nakiyama Slope North, Nakiyama Snowland, the Kitaone Course, and Omusubi. Meanwhile, Sakka Wave (pictured) had ample snow, and was groomed with spring-like granular snow. I had a quick chat with two, who told me, “The route from the bottom of the Kokusai Slope back to the gondola has just barely enough snow cover.”

A Happo regular called out to me and thanked me for covering the technical competition the last several days, and asked if I had gotten any pictures of the athletes Okumura, who came in second, and Kamiya. I did in fact photograph Kamiya-san (pictured, from Hokkaido), who got the top score at the last minute during the Winning Match. (Thank you for your wonderful smile again this year!) And Okumura, representing Kyoto, made a huge leap forward in this year’s competition, so I am sure we’ll be seeing him again soon!
