Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2023.03.16175cm / Partly Cloudy

It was a spring-like day for skiing, with soft sunlight shining through thin clouds. I ran into members of the Rikkyo University Ski Club (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! We’re here enjoying time on the slopes for a 3-day, 2-night trip.” The snow on the resort’s slopes was noticeably dirty yesterday and today, probably due to a combination of pollen and Asian Dust.

I also had a chat with two students from Aichi Prefecture (pictured), who told me they had come out to Hakunori for the first time through a package with Orion Tour. They said they were staying at Hakuba Alps Hotel and that they were impressed with the resort, so they hope to come back again during the mid-winter ski season. The condition of the snow on the groomed Wakaguri Forest Course varied, with “crunchy” snow in the shady areas on the top half of the course, and softer granular snow at the end where the sun was shining.

It was loose granular snow conditions ont he groomed Satomi Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Central Slope. I spent some time talking to a few high school students from Osaka Prefecture (pictured), that said to me, “We’re moving from one ski resort to another within the prefecture and training during the entire month of March. We are currently practicing for a competition to be held in Nozawa Onsen on 3/21 (Tues., national holiday).”

A patrolman took some time to update me, first saying he’s a fan of the Snownavi site, and continuing, “The snow cover on the Rabbit Course is getting thinner. I think it will last until the weekend at the most.” In other news, Hakunori’s annual Kids Event will be held this weekend on 3/18 (Sat.), and 3/19 (Sun.) is a Kids Ski Free Day where elementary school students receive a free one-day ski pass. (*Passes for preschool children are always free.)
