Happo-one REPORT

2023.03.23220cm / Partly Cloudy

Yesterday, Sapporo recorded its highest ever temperature for the month of March with a reading of 19.1°C, as early summer weather was experienced all across the country. Hakuba was no exception, with the afternoon temperature reaching 21.9°C; a level that is more normal for late May. It was another warm morning, but there was still plenty of snow at the end of the Panorama Course (pictured) and on the Panorama Forest Road.

The groomed Panorama Course (pictured) had a thick, loose surface layer of crunchy corn snow from the beginning of the day, but I was able to turn without my skis being slowed or snagged by the snow. Being a weekday in March, customer turnout was slow and the slopes remained in good condition for a long time.

On the southern route of Usagidaira, the groomed, granular snow surface had a soft outermost layer that got thicker and thicker the further I skied down. The area alongside the north-facing Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) had a moderately soft, groomed granular snow surface. The Riesen Slalom Course was groomed with “crunchy” granular snow, while the last part of the route from the south side of the Shirakaba Slope down to the gondola base station had barely enough snow cover.

Spring is the season for moguls! On the ungroomed steep slopes along the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured) and Alpen Quad, I enjoyed runs through the soft, medium to large size moguls. Also, this announcement comes a bit last minute, but HAPPO PARKS will close for the season at the end of this weekend. On the last day, 3/26 (Sun.), there will be a session event joined by guest riders called “HAPPO LINES.” The even will start at 10:00, and there is not cost to participate.
