The 8th Annual Hakuba Paradise Slalom, the last event of the season at Hakuba Iwatake, kicked off today at 9:15 a.m.! Participants compete for the best time on the banked slalom course built on the North Slope, using either snowboards or snow skates. Athletes of all ages entered a total of 11 separate categories, including Open, Legends, and Seniors.

The competition was conducted using a “best time method,” where two runs were skied on the same course and the faster time was used to determine the final ranking. The slopes had a moderately loose, granular snow surface that my skis slid well on. The competition will continue with the second run starting at 12:30 p.m. today, followed by the closing ceremony this evening at 6:30 p.m. at Wing 21 in Hakuba Village.

I ran into Miyuki Shiga (pictured, right), the winner of the Women’s Open category at the “2023 HAPPO BANKED SLALOM” event held on 2/25 (Sat.), who told me, “I’m not thinking of anything but winning…I’m planning on really going for it on the second run!” Chika Tsuboi (pictured, left) of the Chill Life relaxation salon added, “I’m glad I finished my first run and set a good time. Now I can really attack the second run!”

The granular snow on the East and South Slopes was similar to the North Slopes, with moderately soft conditions. A caution sign was set up warning people to be careful on the South Slope, where the area of exposed soil has been increasing. In other news, this is the last Hakuba Iwatake resort report for the season. Thank you very much for taking the time to read our reports this season!
