Happo-one REPORT

2023.04.11165cm / Sunny

Around 20 cm of snow fell across the upper portion of the ski resort on 4/8 (Sat.), followed by strong winds that caused snow to accumulate at the base observation point, resulting in the officially announced figure of 185 cm on 4/10 (Mon.), which was a significant increase. It was a calm, clear morning with a hint of spring haze, and I found a moderately soft, corn snow surface on the Panorama Course (pictured) first thing in this morning.

This photo, taken from a similar angle as a picture from yesterday, shows that the snow on the ungroomed area in the background has become noticeably more dirty and discolored in just a day’s time. The mogul slopes of Kurobishi and Usagidaira had soft, slushy snow that made it easy and fun to ski! The groomed area along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured, foreground) also had a loosely-packed, granular snow surface that my skis slid well across.

The groomed portion on the center of the Skyline Course (pictured) was getting slushy. I had been worried about the area at the end of the course, but today the groomed snow was thick enough to cover the width of about one grooming machine, thanks to the crew who gathered snow from other areas and brought it here to shore things up (a big improvement from 4/8!). On the southern portion of Usagidaira (pictured), there were some spots of exposed ground at the beginning of the run, but it didn’t affect the skiing and I was able to ski at a good speed.

I spoke with a local couple from Hakuba Village (pictured), who told me, “We love your site. The skiing is quite good despite the spring snow.” Another snowboarder from Kanagawa Prefecture, whom I met on the Panorama course, also said they were a fan of Snownavi, and added, “I board at Happo and Tsugaike during the spring. I read yesterday’s report and saw that the slopes had been refreshed by the snow on 4/8 (Sat.), which is why I’m here today.”
