Hakuba47 Winter Sports Park opened for the 2023-24 season today, 12/1 (Fri.). What’s more, almost all of the resort’s terrain is already open, with the exception of the lower parts of Route 7 and Route 1! Combined with Goryu’s Panorama Course that opened yesterday, the current total of 8 runs is the most of any resort in Japan so far this winter.

Again today I ran into the same group of six Hakuba and Otari locals who I met yesterday at Happo. They told me that they were fans of Snownavi, encouraged me to enjoy my time on the slopes, and added, “The snow conditions and weather are perfect for an opening day!” The upper portion of Route 8 (pictured) was well groomed with a moderately soft powder snow surface that was very easy to ski!

The groomed upper portion of Route 1 (pictured) had a similarly soft powder snow surface and was topped off with about 2 to 5cm of light, new snow, as were Routes 5 and 6. I heard from a snowboarder who had dropped into Route 3, a steep ungroomed slope that had remained untouched since the snowfalls of the last several days. He told me, “It was waist-deep and felt great! Now is the only chance to ski Route 3 before the moguls are formed.”

Going back to the start of the day, this is a photo of Goryu47 at dawn. The ice-covered trees surrounding the slopes and the clouds hugging the mountainside were beautifully illuminated by the morning sun. Line-C got started at 9:10 a.m., followed by Line-E at 9:30 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than last night’s announced opening time.
