As I arrived this morning I was greeted by a Yakebitaiyama staff member who cheerfully exclaimed, “Good morning! Our aim is to greet customers with the most pleasant welcome of any ski resort in the world.” Yakebitaiyama Ski Resort opened today on the same day as the opening festival for Takamagahara Mammoth, following the openings of Yokoteyama on 11/18 (Sat.), Kumanoyu on 11/23 (Thu.), and Ichinose Family on 12/1 (Fri.)!

The Fourth Romance Lift began operation at 8:30 and served the South Course, which is the one slope now open for skiing. The immaculately groomed slope was completely free of any exposed bushes or pebbles, and featured that perfect powder snow that’s typical of the high-elevation, inland terrain of the Shiga Kogen area! My skis slid well across the firm surface, and the conditions were just right for intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders looking to enjoy turning.

I spoke with five people (pictured) who said they were part of a larger group of 13. They told me, “We love your site! This is the first time in two years that we’ve run into a reporter for Snownavi. The slopes are in good shape, so we’re going to get some good practice in.” By the way, the two people on the right of the photo are holding a lollipop with a diameter of 10 cm, that was distributed to the first 100 visitors to Yakebitaiyama today.

I caught up with a skier from Gunma Prefecture at the ticket window, who seemed surprised, and said, “Wait, are you with Snownavi? I’m a big fan of your site. Yesterday and tomorrow are family skiing days, but today I’m having fun on my own.” Another skier from Kanagawa Prefecture staying at Hotel Ichibokaku commented, “I love your site and am looking forward to your updates this season.” I also had the chance to go and check out Okushiga Kogen Ski Resort, which is scheduled to open on 12/16 (Sun.), and found about 35cm of natural snow accumulated in the base area (pictured).
