As predicted, it was raining at the base of the mountain this morning; in fact, it was pouring at around 7:30. While being slightly concerned about the weather, I boarded the Goryu Telecabin as it began operating on time at 8:15 a.m., and as I climbed above the Woody Course the rain turned to snow. At Alps-Daira (pictured), winds were blowing in from the southeast, and wet snow was coming down hard.

I crossed paths with five residents of Hakuba Village (pictured), who told me, “We love your site. Are we going to make it into your ski report? Nice! We’ve been out boarding almost every day this season.” The Grand Prix Course (pictured) was groomed to about half its width on the top portion of the run and groomed across the entire surface at the end. Overall, the wet snow surface was moderately firm and topped with a thin layer of fresh snow.

The new snow caused some friction, and I found it difficult to get up to speed. The falling snow and thin fog made it challenging to see the snow surface, again making things tougher than I had expected. The snow in the ungroomed areas, such as the Technical Course (pictured, background), was quite dense.

The Panorama Course (pictured) and the upper portion of Route 8 also had a few centimeters of new snow that kept my skis from sliding smoothly. However, all courses were free of exposed brush or other obstacles, which made for carefree skiing. Around 9:00, the temperature rose, and the falling snow turned to small particles of ice.
