Happo-one REPORT

2023.12.1755cm / Snowy

Today I spoke with a skier from Osaka (pictured, center), who told me, “I love your site! Yesterday I took the lifts up in the rain, but the wind was so strong that I gave up and went down the mountain immediately. Today the conditions are also tough, with the hard, uneven base topped with fresh snow, and thick fog (lol).” A skier from Aichi Prefecture (pictured, right) added, “I joined the group today and this is my first run of the season. Conditions are difficult, but the light, fresh snow feels good!”

Due to the melting snow, the Panorama Course is closed this weekend and only two slope areas, Usagidaira and Kurobishi (pictured), are open for skiing. The rain that fell from 12/15 (Fri.) to 12/16 (Sat.) turned to snow late last night, and this morning it was falling densely along with a northwest wind. All open runs were ungroomed, and there was 10 to 15 cm of light, fresh snow atop a hard base.

The area along the Kurobishi Quad was slightly easier to ski since the ungroomed tracks carved into the base were on the shallower side. It was a different story on the skiers’ left side of Kurobishi (pictured) and the top of Usagidaira (fourth photo), where there were deep and irregular surface bumps along with the poor visibility brought on by the fog and falling snow. I briefly caught up with a Happo regular that I often run into, who told me, “I skied along Kurobishi 3 Pair, and there were snowdrifts with about 25cm of new snow. Tomorrow should be even better!”

Lastly, I crossed paths with a couple from Aichi Prefecture (pictured) that I also met last season. They told me they were fans of Snownavi, and added, “We bought the photos you took last year and made them into our New Year’s cards. It’s our goal to ski at Happo 50 days this season!” At 9:50 a.m., there was a long line for the ticket counter at the gondola base station, with the tail stretching all the way to the road.

*Yesterday, 12/16 (Sat.), a landslide occurred in the Misorano area, but it did not affect Happo or any other HAKUBA VALLEY ski resorts, and traffic to and from the village is completely unaffected.
