Shiga REPORT

2023.12.1930cm / Cloudy

This morning I spoke with a woman from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “I love your site and always look forward to the resort reports. I come to Shiga Kogen more than 10 days a month.” Yakebitaiyama’s Karamatsu course, which opened on 12/9 (Sat.), was forced to close, and the opening of Okushiga Kogen was also postponed due to the melting snow caused by the rain on 12/15 (Fri.) and 12/16 (Sat.).

However, conditions recovered rapidly with the return of the cold weather and fresh snowfall on 12/17 (Sun.). My skis slid well on the well-packed, groomed wet snow surface of Takamagahara’s Mammoth Slope (pictured), which had the feel of powder. The artificial snow cover is also paying dues, as there were no areas of exposed bushes on any of the open courses of Takamagahara or Ichinose Family this morning.

The lower half of the Front Slope near the Ichinose Second Pair is now open. The skiable distance of the slope has been extended slightly and now totals about 600 meters when using the Ichinose Second Pair B Line. As at Takamagahara, I found the moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface with a powdery feel to be very easy to ski.

I chatted with two people from Niigata Prefecture (pictured) who told me they were fans of Snownavi. They added, “We came to Shiga Kogen because there was no snow at our nearby ski resort. We really need the snow to start falling soon. During the winter season we also ski at other resorts ski like Kurohime, Togakushi, and Sugadaira.” Incidentally, Yakebitaiyama’s Karamatsu course is scheduled to reopen tomorrow!
