It has been snowing nonstop since around noon yesterday, and I was thrilled to see the information on the ski resort’s official facebook page that said there was about 30cm of new snow overnight. I was not disappointed as I dropped into the area alongside the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair Lift (pictured). The fresh, dry snow had been pressed into the groomed base, and the additional topping of 15 to 20cm of new snow made for buttery smooth powder skiing.

I spoke with a snowboarder from Shiga Prefecture, who told me, “There are no friends on a powder day, so I left my 4 companions behind to come and get some fresh tracks first. The snow is so nice and fluffy!” By the way, there was enough fresh snow on the ungroomed bits on the sides of the runs so that when you put your feet in, you could easily sink knee-deep.

I also spent time talking to a couple from Saitama (pictured), who told me, “We had some business in Nagano, and used it as an excuse to do some boarding here at Tsugaike. The fresh, fluffy powder has us hyped!” Later when I went to the boarding area for the Tsuga No. 2 Pair, a staff member informed me, “The Tsuga-no-mori Slope is scheduled to open tomorrow. The snow is pretty light, so we need a little more to avoid bottoming out on the ground.”

In other news, the rental store on the 2nd floor of Village Tsugaike (the main ticket center) is now SPICY Rentals Tsugaike (pictured) as of this season. Also, Ramen ITADAKI will open a new shop inside Kitchen Tsuga-no-mori on 12/26 (Tue). Furthermore, on the right side of the approach from the central parking lot to the gondola base station, three other new food options will be opening soon: Tsuganotori on 12/27 (Wed.), Washiya on 12/30 (Sat.), and Wagyu steak TEPPAN on 1/4 (Thurs.)!
